With all the talk of bigger gym equipment and more money, is it really necessary to have a gym?
That’s the question posed to me by a former gym manager in London, who has lived in the UK for over a decade.
He explained that many gyms are now offering more space for exercise, with the average gym size rising by 10-15 per cent each year, and the majority of these facilities have seen an increase in staff.
This means that the average size of the gym has increased by about a third.
This is a big difference to the one I worked in in the 1970s, which was a full-sized gym with no equipment and no staff.
“If you compare the average number of people working in a gym now with the number of gyms then the size of a gym has gone up,” he told me.
“But you can’t compare it to the amount of space you have in the gym now.”
“There are still so many people working out at the same time, so if you’ve got 20 people working on one side of the exercise area, it will only take 20 minutes to do 20 squats.
But now, we’ve got 25 people doing 20 squats on the same side of that exercise area.”
The average size gym, in comparison, has increased.
“You’ll never see the same amount of people at the gym,” he continued.
“If the average is the same, it means it’s getting smaller.”
“And that’s the problem with gym equipment.
It’s getting bigger, but not as small as it used to be.”
The answer, he says, is to get people out of the house and into the gym.
“You’re not going to get any gym-goers working out if they’re working in the house,” he said.
“It’s getting very crowded, and that’s a problem because you’re creating an atmosphere where people aren’t going to work out.”
“It would be nice to have more equipment to work with, but it’s just not there yet.”
There is a misconception that a gym is just a place to go to get a workout.
“As the world continues to grow more populated, the number and size of gym-based facilities continues to increase, with new equipment and staff being added to the mix.
“And there’s no doubt about that. “
It’s important to understand that you can have a bigger gym than a smaller one,” he explained.
“And there’s no doubt about that.
But the problem is that people are not getting used to the size difference.
They’re not being used to being able to do a few reps in a few minutes and being able get their mind off the work of the day.”
So what can be done?
Gym-goers have to start thinking about the gym more, and how they use it.
Mr Nott recommends people start looking at what their goals are and what their needs are before making the decision to get into a gym.
The first step in this process is to establish a regular routine and then find the best gym for you.
